Protective devices protect against electrical overload conditions

Semtech’s HotSwitch platform load switches and eFuses protect systems against electrical transients and steady-state fault conditions. When an overvoltage is detected, HotSwitch devices provide robust safety to downstream subsystems by gracefully disconnecting the load from the power source. They provide enhanced shielding against inrush current, overvoltage, undervoltage, reverse current, short circuit and overtemperature faults.

Two HotSwitch products are now available: the HS2950P single-channel integrated high-side load switch and the HS2240P integrated fuse and surge protection device. The HS2950P is housed in a 3×3mm, 12-pin DFN package, while the HS2240P comes in a 3.5×2mm, 14-pin DFN package.

With a wide input voltage range of 2.7V to 29V, supporting up to 5A output current, the HS2950P load switch provides an on-state resistance of 25mΩ typical to minimize power loss. It contains various adjustable protection functions, including soft start, turn-on delay, overvoltage, undervoltage, and current limit. The device provides thermal shutdown and fault signaling functionality to provide a robust defense for downstream industrial, telecommunications and consumer systems subject to transients and short circuits.

Designed to protect against various electrical overload conditions, such as lightning, electrostatic discharge, short circuit, and inrush current, the HS2240P eFuse has an input voltage range of 2.7V to 22V and a current limiting threshold of 3.9 A. It incorporates a high ESD withstand voltage of ±30 kV for air and contact according to IEC 61000-4-2. The VIN The pin of this device is designed for high-energy transient current up to 40 A (tp=8/20μs).
