Last week, renewable energy sources covered Greece’s electricity demand for around five hours, according to the Independent Electricity Transmission Operator (IPTO). Renewables also reached an all-time high that day and peaked at 3,106 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity.

IPTO hopes this step will help them become greener in the years to come.

Greece depends mainly on natural gas and renewable sources, such as wind and solar. They also use electricity from hydroelectricity and, unfortunately, also use “brown coal”, one of the dirtiest fossil fuels.

Gradually, the use of fossil fuels has decreased in the country as they prepare and use new renewable and hydroelectric power plants to create green energy sources.

Luckily, Greece isn’t the first place in the world to achieve this incredible 100% renewable record. Recently, California set a new record for nearly 100% clean energy use.

Projects around the world are developing new ways to use solar panels and other renewable sources to move away from dirty fossil fuels. architecture students from Barcelona just built a solar-powered greenhouse that uses 50% less energy than it produces. Virginia transforms abandoned coal mines in solar farmsand a start-up helps renovating old buildings in Brooklyn to use clean energy. The The latest IPCC climate report is a final warning for governments around the world on global warming, so it’s great to see companies taking the lead and working towards a renewable future!
